After attending Georgia Tech, Open Source enthusiast Ankur Gupta founded "Axelerant" with his cousin in Atlanta. For the first couple of years, it would be a two-person web development firm focused on building big websites with CMS technologies like Drupal.

Axelerant doubled down on Drupal — shipping large publisher and enterprise builds, contributing patches and themes back to core, and becoming a visible presence at Drupal camps and training days. This period cemented our technical credibility with deep community contributions and enterprise delivery.

We built formal agency partnerships, hosted agency roundtables and community events, and wrote internal programs to encourage meaningful open-source contributions. Those years established Axelerant as “an agency for agencies” — trusted by partners and deeply embedded in the Drupal community.

As our client work matured, Experience Design moved from service add-on to core capability: UX, design systems, and product thinking became part of how we solve problems. The business scaled with new design leadership, design-centric offerings, and stronger revenue and service-area focus.

From 2020 we moved from AI experiments to a leadership-backed, company-wide “AI Transformation” program — labs, prompts, upskilling and governance plus custom GPTs and agents deployed across engineering, design, delivery, marketing, sales and support.Those AI Partners augment everyday work (turning delivery signals into tickets, designs, content and automations) under a human-in-the-loop, progressive-trust model to speed decisions and produce repeatable, business-ready outcomes.
